What does exactly does it mean to share a planet? What exactly do we share and
who with? What effect do our actions have on the Earth? These are the big and
tricky questions we are looking at in the English B class now in one of the course’s
five themes Sharing the Planet.
However, big environmental issues are bit abstract. It’s hard to figure out how they
relate to us so in the English B class we wanted to find out exactly what we and
other people can do. We decided to look specifically at the topic of Fast Fashion
(cheap, trendy clothing that usually has a short life in our wardrobes) which is loved
by young people in Japan and the UK. We researched the topic, but importantly for
the IB, we wanted to look at the variety of perspectives on this issue, from clothes
manufacturers to second-hand market stall holders in Kenya. This led to an
interesting and lively role-play debate with each person pretending to be a different
person affected by Fast Fashion. It helped show the issue is not as black and white
as it seems. Finally, we’re now learning how to write a set of guidelines which
everyone at the school can use to become more sustainable clothes shoppers.
